Create a perfect wavy seam with this quick tutorial.
Place your two pieces of fabric that you want to sew together on your cutting board, right sides up.
Overlap the fabrics (both right side up) slightly more than the depth of the wave you want to sew.
Using a rotary cutter or scissors and cutting just through the fabric where it is overlapped, cut your wavy seam. You can draw it on first but I prefer to do it as I go along. It will look like the image below:
Separate the fabric slightly and remove the two smaller pieces of fabric so you are left with the two pieces you will be sewing together as shown below:
Place these two pieces of fabric right sides together. The wavy seams will not match up.
Sew using a straight stitch and 5mm (1/4in) seam allowance. As you sew, ease the top piece of fabric to it lines up with the bottom piece.
It is best to sew slowly as you will get more accurate results.
You will be left with something that looks like the image below. It won’t lie flat.
Take some sharp scissors and snip into the seam allowance carefully, all the way along. This will help it to lie flat.
Press seams to one side or apart (whichever tickles your fancy) and admire your handiwork.
TOP TIP: Don’t make the wave too deep or it won’t lie flat
